We are running another

Calligraphy class for beginners

Wednesdays, April 3 – April 24 (4 nights) 

7:00 – 9:00 pm   at High River United Church

Instructor:  Melanie McCracken

This is a small group workshop designed, to inspire the beginning

calligraphy enthusiasts about the art of calligraphy in a fun and relaxing setting.    

Cost $60  ( or $30 for those taking as refresher – seriously, can’t we all use a refresher on Italic!)

Pointed brush lettering 

with Calgary calligrapher Tara Hayden    

at High River United Church, 

Saturday, April 13^th   9 am – 4 pm

With a  pointed brush you can press, release, angle and turn to get astounding lettering results. 

Tara will take us through lettering styles designed for the pointed brush.  No experience necessary.

Into the Soul of the Garden

WATERCOLOUR JOURNALING WORKSHOP

with Red Deer artist Sally Towers-Sybblis

at High River United Church,   

Friday, May 3, & Saturday, May 4,

9:30 – 3:30 (both days)

Clay pots, birds, gardening tools ,seed packets,...what lies within the soul of the garden?

Or better yet, what lies within your own soul?

 In this class my hope is that you are going to plant a seed at the bottom of your heart and bring forth a flower culminating in a beautiful hand painted journal laden with wonderful paintings and hand calligraphed quotes.  Along the way we will also delve into some gardening tips and techniques which we can add to the pages.

Come prepared to share your own gardening ideas.

From start to finish you are going to hand craft your own coptic bound journal using the various watercolor paintings we will be working on over the course of the class.Because this is your own personal journal I thought it might be nice in some areas to add your own personal script to the pages as I have done with mine. However, you are welcome to bring assorted pens and nibs of your choice. I will demonstrate some of my favorite calligraphic hands. You may also want to bring some photos, articles or little scrapbook type items that you can add to your journal.Even a seed packet or two might look nice tucked inside.

Cost for 2 day workshop is $100   (we will be having a potluck lunch on the Friday)

Melanie's First Zentangle!

Melanie!  We all know she's an amazing woman!  Last night Sherry Woolgar introduced Melanie to Zentangles.  Well, after the meeting Mel went home, googled it and here's what she's created!  Many of us agree that she needs to teach this to the group in the coming year!

This 6 week course will run on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm

at High River United Church, 123 Macleod Trail, High River, AB  

Cost for the 6 nights of instruction $55.

The Uncial Alphabet is a beautiful, open and round, historical alphabet as used in The Book of Kells.  It is sometimes called the early Christian alphabet as it was used in much of the early Holy writings. It is a majuscule alphabet, so is quickly learned by the more advanced calligrapher but not too difficult for beginners.

The Legend Alphabet is a typeface designed by Ernst Schneidler.  It is easily adapted to pen for calligraphers.  This alphabet has a near Near Eastern appearance and is designed to be written rapidly.  It is characterized by it’s lengthy ascenders and descenders on letters such as: bdfgjhklpqy..

Putting pen to paper and wishes into action...

A New Year, a new beginning.  I love this time of year.  Fresh starts.  A list of things that one wishes to explore.  A time to continue the journey of learning!  Welcome fellow travelers on this journey of creativity.

A few of us met this evening to discuss/brainstorm about what activities we might plan for this coming year at HRUC.

Ideas were plentiful and enthusiasm contagious!

It's going to be a very, VERY exciting year, and you won't want to miss a thing!
